The letter printed on your driver shaft might be the single most misunderstood spec in golf. Players obsess over head models, loft, and adjustable hosels, then bolt a Regular flex into a 105 mph swing because that is what came in the stock club.

Flex is a measure of how much a shaft bends under load. A shaft too stiff for your swing will not load enough, leaving the face open and the launch low. Too soft will overload, the face will close late, and you will see high, hooking shots.
The four standard categories: Senior or A flex, Regular or R, Stiff or S, and Extra Stiff or X. The problem is that there is no industry standard. One brand's Stiff can measure softer than another brand's Regular.

Real swings are messy. Tempo and transition force matter as much as raw speed.

- Diagnose. Most amateurs spin the ball too much.
- Head test. Try two or three head models.
- Shaft test. Bolt the chosen head onto three to five shaft options. This is where most of the gains live.
- Confirm. Hit 20 to 30 drives with the final combination.
A good fit should add 5 to 15 yards of carry and shrink your dispersion cone by 20 to 30 percent.
